Lexington Crest and Chelsea have won a fantastic woollen ‘Horse Deals Gem’ rug thanks to Skye Park & Horse Deals. If you would like to nominate your
horse to be the ‘Gem of the Month’ send in your name, phone number, a picture & a brief description of your horse to email@example.com
How long were you searching for your perfect horse? I had been
looking for a new horse for about 6mths when we first saw Lexington
Crest (Mr Brown) in Horse Deals. We weren’t in any hurry as all our
horses have a home for life so we wanted to find the ‘right one’.
What was ‘it’ about Mr Brown that made you call? We spotted him
in the September 2010 Horse Deals. After many emails and phone calls
to his trainer we decided we should go to Qld and look at him and that
would confirm whether he was worth buying or whether we should put
him out of our minds. Several other people had already looked at him
and for various reasons hadn’t bought him but we thought he was great.
What was your first impression when you saw Mr Brown in real life?
When I first saw him I thought gosh he’s big! Watching the video he
didn’t look that big but when I stood next to him he looked massive,
particularly as my other horse is a galloway. I also saw what a nice
temperament he had and he really was a gentle giant and adored the
How long did it take him to settle into his new home? He settled into
his new home in a couple of days. He had a 2 day trip by truck from Qld
to where we live, just outside Canberra. The first few days he spent in a
paddock by himself so our other horses could see him over the fence.
After that he was accepted into the paddock with our other horses and
they all got on really well.
How long have you owned Mr Brown? We bought him in April 2011.
What have you done together so far? So far we have competed in
pony club events, official dressage classes at elementary level and I took
him to a pony club showjumping competition earlier this year. He seems
to enjoy the jumping almost as much as the dressage. We have regular
dressage lessons and we are currently competing elementary and
training medium in dressage.
Has he lived up to your expectations? He certainly has! He always tries
his best when he is training and seems to do almost anything that you
ask of him. He is a clever horse and picks things up very quickly.
Your most memorable moment together so far? I think our most
memorable moment so far was winning the ACT Dressage Association
(ACTDA) Junior Rider High Point Award at this year’s awards dinner and
Mr Brown won runner-up Elementary Horse of the Year. This result was
based on our scores and placings at several competitions over a year. In
January this year I also took him to PCANSW state dressage camp for a
week at SIEC in Sydney, which was a lot of fun.
Any special achievements? In January this year we competed at the
Pony Club Association NSW (PCANSW) State Dressage Championships
in Orange. He had never been to pony club before I bought him and
he had to travel for 4 hours to get to Orange. He placed 4th & 6th in his
two tests and we placed 3rd overall in the 15 - U17 year old age group
and our team was equal Champion Zone Team for the event. I was very
proud of him as he behaved exceptionally well throughout the weekend.
What is his breeding? He is by the Warmblood stallion Northern Classic
(Hol) (Northern Congress) out of a TB mare Bimbas Magic.
Describe his personality, temperament and quirks. He is generally a
very happy horse but he does get grumpy at feed time when he is in his
stable. He loves carrots and apples! He is usually fairly laid back at events
and takes most things in his stride but he doesn’t like loud noises such as
truck brakes or sirens, particularly when he is in the float.
How has he fitted in with your life? He has fitted in to my life really
well and soon became part of our (human and animal) family. He has his
routine, and seems to enjoy my company.
Your plans for the future? Mr Brown is about to turn 10yo so he has lots
of years ahead of him. I hope to continue with him through the higher
levels of dressage and would one day like to ride him at FEI. My main
objective though is to keep him healthy and happy so that he continues
to enjoy being ridden and competing in dressage.
What advice could you give to readers seeking their Gem? If you are
looking for your next horse and you see a horse that you like in Horse
Deals go and look at it. You’ve got nothing to lose and a lot to gain if it
turns out to be half as good as Mr Brown.
Why is Mr Brown your Gem? He has taught me so much about
dressage in such a relatively short time, I love riding him and learning
new things. He is everything that I was looking for and more. I can’t
imagine life without him. He is part of our family and we love him a lot.
